Mahakala Puja - Losar 2007
Held at Jangchub Choeling Monastery, Nepal
10 - 17 February 2007When a year winds down to an end, it is customary for Tibetan practitioners from all traditions to prepare for the new year ahead.
Ceremonies for the coming Losar / Chinese Lunar New Year
In the entire pantheon of Varjayana Buddhism, dharma protectors known as Mahakala holds a very important position because one could beseech Mahakala for protection, clearing of obstacles, eliminating of obscurities and for the smooth completion of auspicious tasks. You will therefore find it common for Mahakala Pujas to be practiced before any major practices and empowerments. What is unique about these protectors of the Vajrayana tradition is that each different lineages has a dedicated Mahakala whose practice is followed and to whom the followers could beseech to for protection.
It is customary for Tibetan Buddhist Monasteries to hold a session of successive special Mahakala pujas at the end of the year. What is so unique about this year that is ending soon and the new year ahead of us is that the Tibetan New Year, Losar, falls on the same day as the Chinese Lunar New Year. It is a rare occurrence and considered to be most auspicious.
