Kangyur and Tengyur
It has been said that the merits accumulated in sponsoring, printing, circulating and preserving sacred religious texts is immeasurable. These merits will be multiplied by million folds. The blessings accrued will benefit countless sentient beings, for these sacred texts are like indispensable lamps on a dark road, without their luminous presence, gods and men would be plunged into perpetual darkness.
The written religious texts in the Tibetan Buddhists Tradition comprises two parts - the Kangyur and the Tengyur. The Kangyur has more than 100 volumes of the historic teachings of Buddha Shakyamuni, comprising the entire collection of Sutras and Tantras, translated from Sanskrit. The Tengyur in contrast are later teachings and commentaries by the great Indian Mahasiddhas and Panditas, translated mostly from Sanskrit. Over 200 volumes of texts cover all aspects of Buddhist Philosophy, Grammar, Sutras, Tantras, Medicine, Astronomy, Arts and Crafts, Linguistics, Mathematics, Logic, Poetry, etc.

The Potala Palace

These texts seem a simple record of the teachings of the historic Buddha and other learned men on the surface. In actual fact, they represent an immense ocean of magnanimity, strength and wisdom. Prostrating to the Kangyur and Tengyur texts with pure intention and devotion will free one from the sufferings due to negative karma created by ones ego. We should therefore cherish our good karma and this opportunity, prostrate to these precious texts using our body, speech and mind to purify all negative karmas that we have accumulated since beginningless time. We will accrue merits and create positive merits for ourselves. And, by dedicating these merits with Bodhicitta, we spread compassion and unconditional love for all sentient beings.
